This book was a great tool for teaching self care and the importance of balance in our lives. The Good Egg approaches these topics in a humourous way, which I thought made it more relateable for my class.
As a class we brainstormed different self-care stategies we could practice outside school, such as going for a walk, reading a book, or going to bed early. My class understood that sometimes we put too much pressure on ourselves, and it is okay to not be perfect.
My class LOVED The Good Seed & The Bad Egg by Jory John because they were humourous and had good morals behind the story. I challenged my class to create their own Jory John inspired story.
Students picked a type of food and an emotion.
Next, they had to come put with a final outcome - what did the food learn or discover?
Students wrote their story.
Students drew a cover page for their story.
I was very impressed with students stories! They were very creative!
After, students shared their stories through an Author's Chair Activity.
Almost every student in the class volunteered to share thier story. I was very impressed. Each students was very proud to share their story and the rest of the class was very supportive for each student. I think this activity displayed classroom community. Students were geniunely proud of their classmates, and it was truly refreshing.
I would totally have my class do this lesson again.
