my findings:
To start this activity we reviewed what kind words are, and what compliments are. I emphasized that students must write a positive comment about their peers. To make the set up of this activity run smooth, I wrote each student's name onto their "cape" and taped it onto their desk. All students had to do was put on their "cape." To keep this activity on track, I asked my class to keep this activity anonymous and to be silent when walking around the room to make the positive comments a mystery. I also walked around the room writing on students capes, this was a way I could make sure students are on task and I could write on students capes who didn't have a lot of messages yet. After, about 5 minutes, I asked students to join me in a community circle to discuss the activity. During the discussion, I asked students how they felt not knowing what their peers were writing about them. Many responded that they were nervous and scared, we then related this to how sometimes in our friendships we say things that make students feel upset. Basically, my whole class could relate to this. After, students read the messages on their cape. I then asked, 'after reading what was written on your cape, how do you feel?' The whole class responded that they were happy and excited that their classmates appreciated them for various reasons and loved how they showed each other kindness. Next, students look turns sharing one comment off their cape with the group. As each student shared, their faces lit up with excitement. I think students realized how kind words can brighten someones day. I highly recommend it to build community within your classroom!

To further this activity and because it was Random Act of Kindness Day, our class decided to spread kindness throughout our school. We made each staff member a card for Random Act of Kindness Day. As a class we came up with a nice message to write in our cards. Each student used with best printing and wrote the message on 3 cards. Later, students went around to each staff members room and gave them a card. The staff was so happy and appreciative of the kind messages from out class.
This was a great activity. |
