INTRODUCTION
- Often negative behaviour goes beyond the classroom setting (9). Students internal feelings or aspects at home can affect behaviour at school (9). It is not necessarily that the student wants to be defiant (9).
- For example, students may act out if they feel like they do not belong or fit in (9).
- Many students are fortunate enough to have supportive parents at home who can help them with various problems, homework or college tuition (10). But, we need to keep in mind that not all students have this type of support system.
- If a student thinks you do not like them, they won't learn from you:
- Find one thing you genuinely like about each student in your class - Hold on to at least one thing you appreciate (12).
- To create a sense of community:
- Educators can facilitate open communication and try to build a relationship each student (12).
- Teach students the value of community:
- Show them how to live and grow among others, how to help others feel appreciated, and how to contribute to our global community (13).
